Layla

Layla is a beautiful, playful girl that likes to give big wet kisses.  Her owner could no longer care for her but you can tell she was taken care of and even has a  micro-chip.  Her coloring is unique and her puppy-eyes make you smile.  Layla is a loyal friend and is looking for the same in her next family.

05-12-2012 (Week 1 in the Prison Program)

“Layla is a smart puppy.  She will let you know when it’s time for her to use the bathroom by going to the door and sitting down and looking at you.  And if you do not pay her any mind, she will walk right over to you to get your attention and go back to the door and wait on you to take her out.  When she wants something to eat, she will let you know by moving her bowl towards you and sit there in front of you until you feed her.  She does this around feeding time.  Layla has no problem going into her crate and she will stay there and won’t make any noises; she just chills out with her ball and bone.  She also loves playing with other dogs and she is very, very playful and loves people.”

05-06-2012 (Arrival at the Prison Program)

Layla is very excited to start learning new skills so that her new owner will be very proud of her.  The other dogs greeted her and showed her around the yard.

Captain

Captain is a sweet puppy that loves to play with other dogs.  He still needs to learn how to greet older dogs without offending them but he is up for the challenge.  He was dropped off at a shelter and very much appreciates any love and affection he can get especially a good rub behind the ears.  Captain feels a little abandoned and needs your help to restore his confidence.

05-12-2012 (Week 3 in the Prison Program)

“Captain is a lot better in regards to being social; his confidence continues to elevate each day.  He’s at the point where he is willing to learn new things.  He follows training commands wonderfully such as sit, heel, down and come.  He is house-broken for up to 6 hours before letting you know he needs to go outside.  He will bark for less than a minute when I leave and then remains quiet in his crate.  I learned that if I put him in the down command when I leave he won’t bark or whine.  He likes to run and walk during our exercise time and enjoys chasing the ball with other dogs.  Overall, the boy is doing good!  He will never be 100% until he gets into a loving home but the odds are in his favor.”

05-04-2012 (Week 2 in the Prison Program)

“Captain is learning fast and will come when called and sit without any treats.  He still has to master the down command. He hasn’t had an accident inside and has barked only on 2 occasions (once was in union with the other dogs).  He is playing nicely with the other dogs and is more confident about going up to people.  He’s starting to play with the rubber ball so I’m going to use that for his focus training.”

04-28-2012 (Week 1 in the Prison Program)

“Upon entering the cell, Captain sniffed everything for about 30 minutes.  He then jumped on my bed and I calmly said no and he jumped down – Good Boy!  He is well on his way to being house-trained with only a few days and lets you know when he wants to go outside.  During the night he woke me up by whining and I said “you gotta go outside?” and his response was a louder whine.  He will go in his crate by himself to lay down and likes playing with his toys.  Captain has the ‘cute puppy-thing’ going for him and everyone likes to greet him but he is still a little shy.”

04-21-2012 (Arrival at the Prison Program)

Captain is very excited to start learning new skills so that his new owner will be very proud of him.  The other dogs greeted him and reminded him how to politely say hello.

Beatrice

05-12-2012 (Week 9 in the Prison Program)

“This past week, Missy got adopted and left the institution.  As she walked out, Beatrice stood by the fence and howled as Missy left.  Once in the cell, Beatrice whined and paced back and forth sniffing under the door.  I believe I underestimated how attached Beatrice was to Missy.  Beatrice would like to have a home just like Missy.”

05-04-2012 (Week 8 in the Prison Program)

“I had the privilege of working with Beatrice this past week.  I would allow Beatrice to smell the scent of treats in my hand and then I would hide the treats in different parts of the yard.  Out of the 6 treats that I hid, she found four of them and when I brought her outside the following morning, she started searching the area once again for treats and she found the remaining 2 treats.  I was surprised that she would pick up where she left off the previous day!  I noticed this week that whenever she does something wrong, she will come to me and try to lick my face or hand…she is getting real good at that.”

04-28-2012 (Week 7 in the Prison Program)

“I was surprised this week by Beatrice.  I left the cell to get some treats and when I returned I was momentarily surprised.  I didn’t see Beatrice and I know I closed the door when I left and she wasn’t walking around in the hall so where was she?  So I entered the cell and found her in my bunk buried under the covers with only her head sticking out.  This was a very funny sight!”

04-20-2012 (Week 6 in the Prison Program)

“Beatrice is doing very well with everything.  Sometimes she has a little problem with listening but other than that she is alright.  She will walk side-by-side with you on or off leash and has the softest ears you will ever find.”

04-14-2012 (Week 5 in the Prison Program)

“Beatrice is showing a lot of improvement with her training.  I play games with her and hide treats all over the yard and tell her to go hunt for the treats and she finds them all.  She plays nicely with the others dogs but also can play by herself.  She is social with  the people that greet her and is especially social with the other dog Missy.”

04-06-2012 (Week 4 in the Prison Program)

“This has been a good week with Beatrice.  She is really adjusting to her training.  She will sit and wait for her food when it’s time to eat and she will let me take her food bowl away without any aggression.  She enjoys her daily exercise doing laps in the yard and she is being more social with the other dogs and people, especially Zoey.  The training is paying off for Beatrice and she is ready for her new home.”

03-31-2012 (Week 3 in the Prison Program)

“This week with Beatrice has been very interesting but she is just being herself.  Every week I learn something new from her.  We are working very hard with her and she is working just as hard so that she can find a new home soon.  She loves to be rubbed, which makes her a people friendly dog; the more people that likes her, the more rubs she will get.”

03-23-2012 (Week 2 in the Prison Program)

“Beatrice enjoys being around people and playing with the other dogs.  She really enjoys everyday life; you can see it when you are with her.   Beatrice is a very intriguing dog and she isn’t just a dog…she is a very smart dog.  She would enjoy being with a family and having a big backyard.”

03-17-2012 (Week 1 in the Prison Program)

“When I met Beatrice for the first time, we bonded right away; she’s just that friendly of a dog.  She has no problem with the crate and knows her name since she comes when you call her.  Beatrice got a bath this week and took it like a champ.  Beatrice has a mind of her own and loves to groom herself; she is a real lady!  She loves to smell everything outside and it puts her in a trance.  Beatrice is very smart and listens very well.”

03-10-2012 (Arrival to the Prison Program)

Beatrice met the other dogs in the prison program and she is ready to start learning some manners and skills to be ready for her new home.

Dalila aka Zoey

Zoey is a sweet girl who wants nothing more than a home to call her own.  She’s playful, friendly, and eager to please, so while she has the basics down such as sit stay and shake, she’s eager to learn more. Already housetrained, this active and playful girl (who was known as Miss Congeniality at the dog park) is read to hit the trails with you. She is in our Restorative Justice program as well, and you can read the notes of her time there below.  Because of her energy level, she will need a large yard with a tall fence and we do not recommend her with younger children. Zoey is a sweet and loyal girl, who can’t wait for a home to finally call her own.

05-12-2012 (Week 10 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey will be a great addition to any family.  She likes to exercise, play fetch, and play with other dogs especially puppies and smaller dogs.  Zoey is highly intelligent and knows all her commands and is willing to learn more, there is nothing you cannot teach Zoey.”

05-04-2012 (Week 9 in the Prison Program)

“We are continuously working with Zoey both on and off leash.  She gets plenty of socialization every day with other people in the facility as well as staff and the other dogs.  Zoey loves to chase birds and fetch the Frisbee.  Watching Zoey prance around the yard with her head held high, observing everything, like she is the Queen B.  She is a wonderful dog and someday soon will become a great companion for a loving family.”

04-28-2012 (Week 8 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey enjoys being the center of attention when it comes to all the dogs in the program.  Basking in the sun is her favorite past time.  We were playing a game with Zoey using treats and telling her to pick which hand had the treat.  She would pick the correct hand each time and when we tried to trick her and put a treat in both hands she jumped up and grabbed both hands with her paws.  Her demeanor is very subdued and she is more than ready for adoption to a loving family.  Please help her get paroled!”

04-20-2012 (Week 7 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey has been receiving lots of exercise especially playing fetch with the Frisbee.  The focus of her training this week has been to stay seated when let off leash without any distractions.  She mastered this skill within minutes. You can have a conversation with her and she seems to understand what you are saying. Another handler was training his dog to stay and Zoey swatted her paw at the dog as to help out with making the dog stay.  Zoey is amazing.”

04-14-2012 (Week 6 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey is an excellent dog.  She is a leader of the pack and is teaching the other dogs how to play nicely.  She listens to her commands and always seems to exceed my expectations.  Zoey likes to be petted but doesn’t demand attention.  Whomever adopts Zoey is adding a great addition to their family.”

04-06-2012 (Week 5 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey amazes me more and more everyday.  She is easy to train and anything you ask her to do she picks up in a matter of minutes.  Zoey can fetch and return a ball and obeys short and long distance ‘stay’ commands.  She seems to understand every word I say to her.  This week, I started training her to stay in the crate with the door open and she is doing remarkable.”

03-31-2012 (Week 4 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey will make an excellent family dog or single person dog and grows attached to her humans very quickly.  She will be a lovable dog for a family and protector of the house warning you of any unwanted strangers.  Zoey is also a great companion for an outdoor person who enjoys walking or running.  When Zoey becomes your friend, you are a friend for life.”

03-23-2012 (Week 3 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey is one of the most intelligent dogs in this program.  If you want her to do something, she responds right away and learns something new in a matter of minutes.  I started jogging with Zoey this week and she is a great jogging partner; she stays perfectly in a heel position and pays little attention to any distractions around her.  She follows the ‘leave it’ command even around food.  We are working on her barking at people if they approach her too quickly.  Zoey gets a gold star this week for breaking up a dog fight.  Two of the other dogs were getting into a scuffle and she ran between them to break it up.  She then pranced by them as if she was telling them to go their separate ways and they did.  Zoey needs a confident person to adopt her and one who can appreciate her intelligence.”

03-17-2012 (Week 2 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey is a highly intelligent dog and is very easy to work with.  She responds well to all commands given by me and other handlers.  If you say crate, she will go inside her crate without any hesitation and if you want her to return, come, leave something or stop she listen’s  whether on or off leash.  Zoey and Beatrice are still getting to know each other and sometimes Zoey will bump Beatrice trying to provoke her or dart past her quickly.  We are working on them becoming friends.”

03-09-2012 (Week 1 in the Prison Program)

“Zoey has not forgotten any of her commands.  She is now working on advanced commands such as hand signs, fetch and return, heal, and dropping items once she brings them back to you.  Zoey is highly intelligent and picks up on anything that you teach her in a matter of minutes.  She also has no problem taking commands from others.  Zoey loves to be petted and will fall asleep with her head up while you are petting her.  She loves to be the center of attention and she listens very well.”

03-03-2012 (Returned to Prison Program)

Zoey returned to the prison program today to learn a few more manner.  Everyone was happy to see her and she is settling in nicely.

01-01-2012 (Week 6)

“When Zoey lays down, sometime she gives out a moan especially when she doesn’t get her way and it’s kinda cute.  There was a bird in the tree outside and she chased it back and forth from tree to tree.  When the bird flew into the low shrub, she climbed in it and all you could see was her tail sticking up out of the bush…it was really funny!  She is starting to sit on her own before when entering or exiting a building without being told to do so.  She continues to exhibit signs that she is ready to be adopted.”

12-25-2011 (Week 5)

“This week, Zoey jumped on my bed and gave me the cutest look!  She still had to sleep in her crate though.  I call her a Diva Doggie. A new dog arrived and she played nicely with him and welcomed him into the pack.  She has brought a sparkle of love to a usually loveless place and warmth to everyone’s soul during the holidays. Thank you!”

12-17-2011 (Week 4)

“I will miss Zoey but I will be happy to know that she is going to a loving home one day.  Earlier in the week, Buddy came to her water bowl and drank from it but she did not get upset (Good Girl).  Still to date, she has never had an accident and always does her business outside.  She’s done real well with a consistent routine and goes into her crate by herself when it’s nap or sleepy time.”

12-03-2011 (Week 3)

“This week Zoey did GREAT.  She can sit, stay, go down and up and lets you take away her food or favorite toy without a problem.  A child could probably pull lightly on her ears or tail without her getting irritated.  All in all, she is a sweetheart. Why she hasn’t been adopted yet I don’t know.  One day, she and Fuzzy Wayne grabbed either end of a toy and ran around the yard together for about 10 minutes side-by-side like two dogs hitched to a sled (with no aggression).  She has never had an accident inside and can hold it for a really long time.  She responds well to her name too (Zoey not Dalila).”

11-27-2011 (Week 2)

“When it’s bedtime, Zoey goes directly to her crate to lay down and when told to go to sleep she does.  She knows basic commands like sit, stay, down and she doesn’t jump on people or lick your face.  She doesn’t have any food or toy aggression.  She always goes to the door if she needs to go outside and doesn’t have any accidents.  Zoey must have enjoyed her bath since she didn’t seem to mind it all.  Zoey doesn’t always eat all of her food but she chewed her pink bandanna.”

11-19-2011 Arrival (Week 1)

“Upon entering her new surroundings, Zoey took time to sniff out every corner, laid down and let out a big SIGH! Both of her handlers replied, “Yea–we know exactly how you feel.” She loves attention, loves being rubbed and petted. By day 3, Zoey is adjusting well but wasn’t liking her food very much until we added some warm water, then her love of it was restored!  She has begun fetching her toys, lays down when told and has no problems with being in the crate.  She has never had an accident indoors.  Zoey responds better to praise than to treats and sometimes gets jealous if we pet other dogs but she is a Good Girl.”
