Opal is a gem of a dog. She stands true to her breed – she is definitely a beagle! She loves being outside with her nose to the ground, taking in all the sights and smells. She loves going on walks (and with her energy, she definitely needs to go on walks), but is still learning how to walk on a leash without pulling. She gets along fine with dogs her own size, but she isn’t a huge fan of dogs much larger than her. She hasn’t been around cats, but due to her hunting nose and interest in chasing squirrels, she would not likely do well in household with a cat. She gets along well with all people, including children. However, she still tends to puppy-bite while playing, but nothing that can’t be fixed without a toy to distract her. She loves fetch, tug-of-war, or just relaxing with a bone.
Opal appears to have been trained by previous owners. She knows the basic commands (i.e. sit) and appears to be housetrained (no accidents so far in foster care! And she goes to the back door when she needs to go outside). She also happily goes into her crate when asked and does well when left alone. Atypical from a beagle, she is actually pretty quiet! When she does have something to say, it’s that beagle howl that comes out, but she doesn’t really bark at all when home and does not cry when left alone. She makes a great cuddler when it’s time for naps or bedtime. She will sleep soundly next to you in a crate or gladly accept an invitation to sleep next to you on the bed (and knows not to wake you up until you’re ready). She’s a happy-go-lucky girl who loves walks and adores treats, and wants nothing more than a home to call her own!
Opal would do best as an “only child.” She can get jealous around other dogs in the household around food and toys and may express some aggression; however, there are no problems when she is the only dog. She would do great in an active household where she will spend a lot of time outdoors with them and where she can get all the love and attention an only dog could imagine!
