Dog Handler at Adoption Events
Do you love dogs? Would you wear slobber and dog hair as a mark of a day well-spent? Yes? Perfect! You are just the person we need to help us stage our weekend dog adoption events!
Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Volunteers under the age of 17 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
How it Works:
Every weekend, Lost Dog Rescue sends vans filled with our adoptable mutts to our adoption events across the Northern Virginia and Maryland area.
As the dogs come off the van at the beginning of the event, you will be matched with a dog for the duration of the event, and your job will be to help that dog shine. We’ll provide onsite training and experienced volunteers will be on hand to provide support.
All volunteers must be prepared to hold their dog and stay with us for the entire event.
How to Sign Up:
Email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out how to get started.
You can check out our adoption event schedule to find the event most convenient for you. Each week, you’ll receive our Volunteer Email Newsletter, which will include instructions to reply to the email to sign up for an event. You will receive a confirmation email (or notification that the event already has enough volunteers).
Walking Dogs at our Kennel
Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation manages a kennel facility in Falls Church, VA, and we have lots of volunteer opportunities for dog walking and cat socializing, as well as basic kennel chores! We took over the Seven Corners Kennel in Falls Church, VA in the fall of 2017 to make space for dogs and cats affected by the hurricanes that overwhelmed Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Since then, it has become an inspiring hub of amazing volunteers!
There is a small staff cleaning and making sure the animals are cared for at the kennel, however volunteers are needed daily to walk dogs, help clean dog kennels, clean cat cages, socialize cats, manage play groups, greet new volunteers, and dole out lots of TLC!
Volunteers MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH DOGS and BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OF AGE to sign up for dog walking.
For everyone’s safety, CHILDREN (UNDER 18) ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE KENNEL AREA.
How to Sign Up:
First Time Kennel Volunteers – New volunteer orientation/training is required for all first-time volunteers at the kennel. When you sign up, please make a note that you are new, and we will contact you prior to your requested date/time in order to schedule a new volunteer orientation with one of our volunteer ambassadors.
Sign up for a shift (or shifts) to let us know when you can come by. Even if a shift looks full, don’t hesitate to drop in—the dogs are always up for some extra love or outside time. If you can’t stay for an entire time slot, that’s fine. We are happy to have your help!
What to Expect:
When you arrive at the kennel, park in the lot by our building or in the shopping center parking lot (NOT at the building across the street).
Then enter the kennel through the large white metal gate and door, and sign in at the volunteer table. Make sure and check out any posted notices or new announcements or rules.
The white boards on the far wall will have a list of all the dogs at the kennel, if they have been walked or had time in the play yard, and any other special notes. All of our dogs are also color-coded, and you will receive information about that, including which dogs to walk, at your orientation.
Mark the dog you are intending to walk BEFORE your walk. Don’t stop at the board while you have a dog on leash. For everyone’s safety, move quickly through the lobby when you have a dog with you.
Where is the Kennel Located?
The kennel is located at 6801 Wilson Blvd, Falls Church, VA. It is directly behind the Eden Center and must be accessed by the smaller entrance to the Eden Center off of Wilson Blvd. This is the entrance without an arch, with smaller concrete lions, right next to the Arlington Motors sign.
As soon as you turn into the Eden Center, turn left. Follow that road to a large gray building with yellow awnings ahead.
*** If Google maps say the building is closed, don’t fret. The PREVIOUS business closed. ***
If you are interested in taking dogs out for longer day trips or overnight visits to your house, email email@example.com to learn more!
Some of the dogs who have been at the kennel a long time would really appreciate a change of scenery for a few hours.
